Orthodontics has experienced dramatic advances in orthododontic technique and commercial armamentaria but the expected total treatment duration for the conventional patient has changed little. Surgically-based procedures such as corticotomy, piezocision, or accelerated osteogenic orthodontics is claimed to dramaticallky reduce treatment time but many questions of cost and risk arise.
Three non-surgical approaches are outlined that may be developed into mainstream treatment adjuncts in the future to reduce treatment time and choices may include, high frequency vibration, (Acceledent), phototherapy (Biolux) and therapeutic ultrasound.
